This is Lisa's fault.
List five things that other people may consider to be 'totally lame,' but you are, despite the possible stigma, totally proud of. Own it. Tag five others.
1. I find brushing my teeth therapeutic.
Yeah, this is weird, I know. I can't exactly explain it. Maybe the vigorous motion helps to expel my frustration. Maybe it's the shiny clean feeling of my molars afterwards. Maybe it's the promise of a clean start to the day (or the pretense of restarting a day, if I am brushing my teeth mid-day). I hate to leave the house without brushing, and I am such a vigorous brusher that my dentist has banned me from having an electric toothbrush or even a hard bristled brush, for fear of the damage I may do.
2. I have an ongoing obsession with Safeway roast chickens.
Any time I go past the roast chickens at the deli, or the newfangled hot chicken counters, I feel a compulsion to buy a chicken. It's my main impulse buy (well, except for chocolate). I think it's because the other tempters don't have a scent... And it's got to be Safeway chickens. Coles chickens are too dry. Leo's do very yummy organic chickens, but that's only for days I feel rich.
3. I lo-o-o-o-ve tea.
At the height of my tea collection, I had over 70 different types of tea. This is more than some tea stores exhibit! I'm quite finicky about tea and its preparation; for example, you must use water off the boil to prepare green tea (Boiling water burns the delicate green leaves). I have different tea pots for different purposes, and different cups for different types of beverage. I have to avoid the tea aisle in the supermarket, I cross the road away from specialty tea stores to avoid spending all my money on an absolute glut of tea. I have no shame in driving all the way to the Dandenongs just to visit my favourite tea store, Tea Leaves.
4. I am a word nerd.
I am an English teacher, a spelling pedant, a grammar Nazi. I read blogs by book people. I watch Book Club tv shows. I am fascinated by word origins, and loved studying Old English, as it taught me the roots of our language. I am intrigued by linguistics and base languages; while I'd love to learn Portuguese and Spanish, and improve my Indonesian, my real desire is to learn Latin. And yet, for all my word-nerdiness, I am shocking at Scrabble...
5. I secretly want to be on Idol.
I know that Idol is not cool. I know that the contracts you have to sign suppress any musical independence. I know that being on Idol doesn't guarantee you a career (I'm not even sure I want a music career). But damn it, it looks like fun, and I am sure I could do it. Then again, that's probably what all the tragics humiliated on those embarrassing grabs thought before they went on and screeched, I mean sang their little hearts out. But I doubt I'll ever get around to auditioning- Years of music lessons simply don't equip you with the skills to stand in line all day, trying to stand out from the crowd of other desperate hopefuls.
I don't actually know many people who blog, so I'll be tagging people through email. Hayley, Jackie, Dom, Paul, Nick.

I don't have a blog, and I haven't been tagged, but I'm co-opting Nai's anyway.
ReplyDeleteHere are just five of the many, many lame things about me:
1)I'm interested in finances. I like looking after my own finances, doing my taxes, dabbling in the share market. I like reading about finaces. I read the fin review, I read personal finance blogs (or PF blogs, to those in the know!). I watch Inside Business and could happily while away the hours watching the business channel if I had Foxtel.
2)I'm interested in property. I like going to auctions. I know the names of all the major Australian house periods - I can tell an Edwardian from a Victorian and even spot the cross-over period houses. I like watching "Property Ladder", a show about people who buy run down houses and do them up and sell them for a profit. I read "Architectural Digest". I like decorating property and I went to Finland just to look at furniture.
3) I like everything about languages. I like learning them, I like helping other people to learn them (even against their will). I can spell. I know where to put apostrophes. I like learning grammar. I like reading about the history of languages and identifying the origins of words.
4) I like things that only 80 year olds should like. I like going to antique shops. I like watching "Antiques Roadshow". I like researching my family history and I pay attention when older members of my family tell stories or give titbits of information about the past. As a result, I've also developed an interest in the history of Melbourne and of Vienna and it's surrounds.
5) More revealing are the things I DON'T like that make me lame. I don't like sport. I didn't watch the grand final. I don't like drinking copious amounts of alcohol. I don't like just listening to music, I need something interesting to watch if there is going to be music - so I don't like going to see bands. I don't like musicals. I don't like singing. I don't like picnics or barbecues.
Oh, I forgot to mention, under 4) things that only 80 year olds should like, I like watching Midsommer Murders. The weekend doesn't seem complete unless I've seen at least one murder in the British countryside.
ReplyDeleteI do believe there was an incorrect use of the apostrophe in point 4.
ReplyDeleteOh god. I thought you meant in MY point 4. Which would have been mortifying, as it was the point about me being a word nerd. But no, you meant Caroline's. Phew.
ReplyDeleteNo, it was my point 4. My point 3 was the one about being a word nerd, so that's lucky.
ReplyDeleteOh my god!! I'm a word nerd too, which I put on my one, and I fantasise about Idol! Soulmates!!
ReplyDeleteI didnt get a tag either, but thats otay...
ReplyDelete1. I LOVE TO ARGUE & I DO IT TO GET REACTIONS ~ hehe, this ones for you gnomes. Without my ma to argue with anymore, unfortunately you are the next best thing & you are so easy to wind up! Steve just walks away from me, so I know you hate that I do it, but its cos I love you & im only doing it for my fix.
2. I THINK I HAVE A CHOCOLATE ADDICTION... can that happen? ~ I have tried to give it up, but I SERIOUSLY cannot go a day without it. I cant get past the withdrawal stage. I know this is bad!
3. (Like Caroline) I LOVE REAL ESTATE ~ its really lame, but its the only thing im good at & I love it. Love the pretty houses, love the presentation ideas, love the stupid moronic questions you get asked by people, dont love the crazy idiotic vendors, love pretty tudor style homes & am totally jealous of everyone who owns a house & not yet me! And one day I aspire to be a truthful, hardworking & sucessful one.
4. NON CHILDREN OBSESSION ~ pretty strange one here, but i could happily not have children & be quite happy with that. Not sure how/why but im not overly a child oriented kind of gal... I dont think I have even held any of my cousins before?? I would happily adopt a teenager & deal with puberty that the thought of dealing with a screaming baby. This isnt very good is it?
5. I AM ADDICTED TO READING DEPRESSING, DRUG & ABUSE BIOGRAPHIES/NOVELS ~ Not quite sure why but the reason behind this is that im trying to work out the reasoning behind my mum's life departure? For some reason by reading these sort of stories, make me think that I am very fortunate for my life. Hmmmm?
